Is it safe to fuse plastic with paper inbetween the layers?

You need to worry more about the melting plastic fumes than the magazine clipping. You should wear a respirator filter mask (not just a dust mask but the kind that catches chemicals and paint fumes.) Ink is almost 100% vegetable-based these days. Magazines are usually coated with a nasty teflon-based varnish but again, the amount is teeny tiny compared to the plastic fumes. Kick down the $20 for a good mask - if you are a DIY kinda girl you'll use that mask all the time.
